How To Make Seriously Delicious Marijuana Edibles At Home
Marijuana edibles have been a popular cannabis consumption method throughout history, with evidence of use dating back to as early as 2000 BC. Today, there are more than ten types of edibles available in the cannabis market, and the good news is you can make some of them at home.
Making your own edibles may be a little harder than just ordering weed online, but it’s a fun process, and you can add your twists to available recipes. Making your own edibles also means knowing exactly what and how much of it went into your product.
But before we get into that, let’s refresh your mind on what counts as an edible and what you need to know before dumping raw bud into food.
Cannabis is a versatile plant that can be infused and used in several ways. Smoking remains the most popular method. Although vaporization – the new kid on the block- may become the king of all consumption methods, edibles are easily the second most popular consumption method. But what is a marijuana edible?
Cannabis edibles are simply cannabis-infused foods. They are homemade and commercially produced food items infused with an active cannabinoid such as THC or CBD to cause a “high effect” or medicinal benefits.
Today, you can easily buy weed edibles online in Canada by ordering them from a reputable mail order dispensary and having them delivered straight to your door. While it’s convenient, you may want to bake your own once in a while or as a pass-time activity.
What You Need To Know Before You Start Making Edibles
Before you dump the weed into a pan, there are several considerations to make to ensure everything goes on smoothly. The first one is how fast you want the effects to kick in. Cannabis edibles are regular foods with an additional cannabinoid ingredient.
They have to go through the digestion process and the first-pass effect, where the cannabinoid is broken down further by the liver. This takes time which means you may have to wait for 30 minutes to two hours before the effects kick in.
How To Make Weed Edibles
Gone are the days you could take any bud and hope it delivers the effects you want. Today, you can buy high-quality weed online and have it delivered to your doorstep. You also need to ensure you pick the right strain depending on the intended use and effects.
Do you want a nighttime or daytime edible? Are you making the cookies for a party, or do you want a bedtime snack? Although weed has different effects on individuals, indica strains are generally better for relaxing and sativas for daytime use.
There’s a reason why cannabis is mostly smoked and not eaten raw. This is because raw cannabis contains little to no THC. Instead, it’s chock full of THCA, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has to be converted to THC in a process called decarboxylation.
For this step, preheat your oven to 240 °F. Remember THC evaporates at around 314 °F; ensure the temperature doesn’t get anywhere near that, or you may lose the potency.
Break down the bud into smaller, more manageable pieces and place them on a cookie sheet. Put the loaded sheet into the oven for 30-40 minutes.
Monitor for color changes. When the vibrant green changes to a golden brown, the bud is ready. Remove the toasted weed from the oven and let it cool down.
3. Create An Infusion
The vast majority of recipes include ingredients such as butter and oil. While you may infuse the edible directly, it makes much more sense to infuse versatile ingredients that you can use in many recipes instead. This also means you can make larger quantities and use them over time.
You can either make cannabutter or canna-oil infusions to use in your recipe.
- You will need 1 ounce decarboxylated ground weed, 2 cups of water, 1 pound unsalted butter, cheesecloth, sieve, plastic wrap, and a bowl.
- Boil the butter and water until the butter melts. Add in the ground cannabis, mix and simmer the mixture for 5 hours, stirring every 90 minutes. Don’t let the mixture boil. Also, you can add some water if the level gets too low.
- Use the sieve and cheesecloth to extract the mixture into the bowl, separating the weed plant materials.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the mixture separates into water and butter. Pour out the water and store the butter.
- You will need 6 cups of olive or canola oil, 1 ounce decarboxylated weed, sieve, cheesecloth, bowl, saucepan.
- Heat the oil on low until it produces an aroma.
- Add a pinch of weed and stir, don’t add it all at once.
- Simmer for 45 minutes, stirring regularly.
- Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool before straining it into the bowl to extract the oil and separate the plant materials. Store your canna oil.
To avoid overconsumption, ensure you know how much THC is in your cannaoil or cannabutter and how much you should use in the recipe. For this, you need to know the average THC levels of the product you used to make the cannabutter and how much oil or butter you used.
For example, an ounce is 7 grams. Each gram is 1000mg; assuming the bud you used is 15% THC, which works out to about 150mg THC per gram, it’s safer to assume that the cannabutter has 1050mg THC. So if your edible recipe calls for 1⁄4 cup butter, you know how much THC is in that and dose accordingly by mixing a little of the cannabutter with regular butter.
Now that you have your cannabutter or canna-oil ready, use them to make any edible whose recipe calls for either. You can make homemade gummies, cakes, cookies, brownies, and more! Alternatively, you can order high-quality weed edibles from Canada’s top mail-order marijuana online dispensary.
