What is a Vape Pen?

Before we answer the ‘Can you bring weed vape on a plane in Canada?’ question, let’s go through the basics of a weed vape pen so you can fully understand the types of products we are discussing. So, what is a weed vape pen?

A vape pen in simple terms is an electronic device used to heat a liquid containing cannabinoids and terpenes among other ingredients. This device produces vapour that is then inhaled by the consumer.

Inhaling the vapour delivers cannabinoids and terpenes into the lungs where they are absorbed into the bloodstream, causing the effects and benefits associated with cannabis.

Vapes come in all styles and designs. However, all have four essential parts: the battery, coil, tank and mouthpiece.

The battery is what provides the power to the coil which in turn heats the vape liquid from the tank, turning it into vapour. The consumer then inhales this vapour through the mouthpiece.

Vape parts are also made from a variety of materials. From metal, glass, plastic, quartz and even ceramic. Can you bring weed vape on a plane in Canada if it is made of metal?

Before we get into what the law says, weed vapes come in different types. However, they can be categorized into two: disposable and non-disposable.

Disposable weed vapes are designed to be used until the vaping liquid runs out. They come with pre-filled vape cartridges and cannot be refilled, which is why they are disposed of after use.

Non-disposable weed vapes are designed to be reused, probably until something gets broken or stops working. They come with a rechargeable battery and refillable, or swappable weed cartridges.

When the cart runs out, all you have to do is purchase a replacement or weed distillate from a mail-order marijuana dispensary. Now that you know what a weed vape is, does weed vape smell?

Weed vaporizers do not burn cannabis flower, instead, they heat it to produce vapour which is inhaled by the consumer. But do they produce a smell like smoking a joint or blunt?

Do Weed Vapes Smell?

Weed vaporizers do not burn cannabis flower, instead, they heat it to produce vapour which is inhaled by the consumer. But do they produce a smell like smoking a joint or blunt?

Yes, vaping smells of weed. However, it is not the same as when you smoke it.

The smell of weed from a weed vape pen isn’t as strong as the scent you get when you burn cannabis. Also, the smell dissipates very quickly and doesn’t linger as long as it does with flower.

The smell is typically gone by the time you are done vaping. Weed smoke on the other hand sticks to hair, the room, and clothing and lets everyone within a several metres radius know what you are up to.

However, this also depends on the type of vaporizer you are using. Dab rigs’ smell lingers the most, followed by dry herb vaporizers, dab and wax pens, while oil cartridges produce the mildest odour that dissipates very quickly.

Weed vapes with terpenes produce stronger scents than pure THC distillate vapes. Vaping weed offers you a way to consume weed discreetly as the aroma is mild, doesn’t linger and doesn’t produce visible smoke.

However, that doesn’t mean you can smoke it everywhere. Different provinces have regulations on consuming cannabis in public and you are definitely not allowed to vape in an airplane or airport.

You are typically allowed to pack your vape in a carry-on. The CATSA site advises travellers to check with their carrier if they can bring weed vapes in checked baggage.

5 Things You Need to Know Before Bringing Weed on a Plane

  1. Possession limits: The Cannabis Act allows any adult to possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in public for non-medical purposes.

However, the limit changes depending on the form of cannabis you are consuming. For example, adults are now allowed to possess up to 17.1 litres of cannabis beverages in public for personal use.

  1. Legal age in the province you are visiting: The Cannabis Act allows any adult aged 18 or older to buy, use and share cannabis with other adults. However, this changes from province to province.

The minimum for cannabis use in most provinces is 19 years except in Alberta where it is 18 years and in Quebec where it’s 21 years. As such, it would be illegal for a 19-year-old to travel with weed from British Columbia to Quebec.

  1. Liquids, aerosols and gels LAGs restrictions: Some cannabis forms are restricted in LAGs restrictions on carry-on baggage. According to CATSA, products such as tinctures, vapes, topicals and oils are restricted to containers of 100ml or less.

The containers must be placed in one clear 1-litre resealable bag. Containers with a capacity of more than 100ml, even if the contents are less than 100ml must be placed in the checked baggage.

  1. Medical cannabis limits: Medical cannabis patients are allowed higher possession limits than those using weed for personal use.

Authorized patients are allowed up to 150 grams or a 30-day supply of dried cannabis, whichever is lesser, in addition to the 30-gram personal limit. However, if you are flying with medical weed, you must be ready to show you are legally allowed to possess more than 30 grams.

  1. You can only fly with weed on domestic flights: It’s illegal to bring cannabis from other countries into Canada or to take it out of the border.
